Travel insurance traps
Cheap Travel Insurance Traps:
How to Avoid Them

For many of us buying cheap travel insurance is simply a question of quickly choosing a policy that seems to have the right levels of coverage and buying it as fast as we can--this is one of the most common travel insurance traps. Not taking into consideration travel insurance secrets may mean that you end up paying even more for your policy than needed.

The fact is that there are various travel insurance secrets out there that you need to know about.  So, if you get it wrong then you could end up with a policy that doesn’t actually give you the coverage you need and that costs more than it should. Let’s take a look at the most common travel insurance traps.

Common travel insurance traps and travel insurance secrets

  • Exclusions:  The exclusions that will be listed in your travel insurance policy will tell you when the insurer will not allow you to make a claim. So, for example, if your policy tells you that it gives coverage for sports activities, it may also exclude extreme sports. So, make sure that the exclusions won’t be an issue to you; otherwise, you won’t be able to make a claim.

  • Features:  Getting a travel insurance policy that is packed full of features may be great on one level, but it could be wasting your money on another. One of the best travel insurance secrets is to look for policies that only give you the coverage you need and avoid features that you know that you will never use.

  • Single/Multi-Trip:  Consumers often take out a multi-trip or annual travel insurance policy when going on holiday as it works out cheaper than buying a lot of single trip policies. But, think hard before doing this if you will only be making one trip a year!

  • Incorrect coverage:  Try to buy a policy that actually covers where you are going and what you want to do. There’s no point buying a standard holiday insurance policy for a skiing trip as you won’t have the right kind of coverage when you ski off the mountain! Don’t be tempted to simply buy cheap travel insurance if it doesn’t give you the coverage you need as you could lose out big time if you need to make a claim.

  • Existing coverage:  Check your house insurance policy to see if it gives you coverage for personal possessions when you are on holiday. Many will offer additional holiday coverage which means that you don’t have to pay again to get coverage on your travel insurance. This is one of those travel insurance secrets that insurers won’t tell you about!

  • Duty of care:  If you are careless and subsequently lose or damage some of your possessions then you may not be able to make a claim. One of the most common travel insurance traps is not to realize that you have to look out for your stuff or the insurer can pull the “Duty of Care” exclusion clause.

It’s actually relatively easy to avoid travel insurance traps and to understand travel insurance secrets. All you have to do is to make sure that you know exactly what you need from a cheap travel insurance policy and that you choose a policy on that basis. And, at the same time, check for exclusions or clauses that would give you problems if you need to make a claim.

Finally, the most common travel insurance traps involve cost. Don’t be tempted just to buy cheap travel insurance from your travel agent as you will be able to get it cheaper elsewhere in most cases. Make sure to use your travel insurance secrets knowledge and to shop around for the best quotes—and, try to buy online if you can, as you could get an extra discount!
