Dog insurance
Dog Insurance:
How to find the best insurance for dogs

One of the biggest problems faced by many dog owners is the cost of medical care. If your dog falls ill or has an accident, then of course you want to get it better, but, with vet bills and medical care set at such high rates, this isn’t always possible. Luckily, however, you can get some financial help with these kinds of issues by taking out dog health insurance. These kinds of policies give dog illness protection and help pay for accidents and injury, so with insurance for dogs in place, the insurance company can pick up the vet’s bill!

Finding the best dog insurance policy is not necessarily simply a question of picking up a pamphlet in your vet’s clinic or doing a quick online search. To get the best dog health insurance coverage that you can for your pet at the best cost, then you will need to shop around for dog illness protection and make sure that the insurance for dogs policy that you choose gives you the right coverage. Let’s take a look at some common features worth seeking.

Choosing the right features with a dog insurance policy

Many features of your insurance for dogs policy will be offered as standard, but don’t assume that ALL policies will offer the same coverage. Things to watch out for include:

  • Breed coverage:  If you own an expensive or rare breed of dog then it may not be covered by a standard policy. Check the exclusions of the policy to make sure that your breed will be covered.

  • Medical coverage: Does the policy cover all aspects of medical treatment? Most routine appointments (such as regular vaccinations and worming treatments) won’t be covered, but all the costs of a vet hospital stay or prolonged treatment should be covered. Nowadays, it is also possible to get coverage for alternative treatments if you would like to use this instead of standard medical treatments.

  • Dog loss:  A lot of dog health insurance policies will give you coverage to help you out financially if your dog strays or gets lost. This could include money towards advertising costs and cash for a reward. Many insurance for dogs policies will also give out payments to help you with a cremation/burial or will pay a lump sum if it dies. Others will give a lump sum to help replace your pet if it dies, strays, or is stolen and you cannot get it back.

  • Emergency Boarding:  If you cannot look after your dog (say if you are rushed to hospital) then some policies will pick up the cost of putting your pet in kennels.

  • Age: Not all dog health insurance policies will offer coverage for the entire life of your dog and some will only give coverage until it reaches a certain age. Look for dog insurance that has no age limits.

  • Pre-existing conditions:  Not all dog health insurance policies will give you coverage for an existing medical condition. Here, you may have to pay more to get dog illness protection coverage or agree to pay a higher deductible before making a claim for the condition. If you know that there is a chance that your dog has a risk of getting a hereditary condition, then check with the insurer to see if you will be covered.

  • Multiple discounts: Most insurance for dogs will come at a discount if you insure more than one pet at the same time with the insurance company.

  • Legal costs: If your dog injures somebody or damages property then you could be liable for costs. This feature gives you protection in this instance.

  • Holiday costs: Many dog insurance policies will give you coverage for your dog when on holiday. Some will only give US coverage while others will give coverage out-of-country.

As well as checking out the features that you need with dog insurance, make sure to read through the terms and conditions of any dog health insurance policy to find out what the exclusions are. All dog illness protection plans will have exclusions; these are events where you will not be able to make a claim even if you have insurance for dogs.

Finally, do remember that the easiest route to the cheapest dog insurance is to look at a lot of quotes. The more dog health insurance quotes you can compare, the easier it will be to find the cheapest costs. So, don’t take out any dog illness protection policy until you have checked what it can and cannot cover you for and until you have compared policies to find affordable insurance for dogs.
