Home insurance claims procedure
Home Insurance Claims Procedure:
Understanding How to Make a Claim

Making a home insurance claim is actually a relatively straightforward process, but it can seem a little confusing at first. This is generally because we aren’t actually in the habit of making house insurance claims on a regular basis, so we basically don’t know what to do.

If you are in the situation of having to get through a home insurance claims procedure, then don’t worry. Your insurance company will help you through the process of making a home insurance claim as you go along. But, you can make things quicker and easier by making sure that you have the information that your insurer needs to know at hand when making house insurance claims.

The actual process of making a claim may vary slightly from insurer to insurer, but in basic terms you will need to:

  • Contact the insurer when you need to make a claim to tell the company what has happened; this will usually simply involve a phone call.

  • Be available to answer any questions your insurer may have, to supply further information on the claim, or to meet with a representatives if visits are necessary as the process is sorted.

The process of making a home insurance claim can be made much easier and can be handled more quickly if you have all relevant information to hand when you make a claim. So, for example, you will need to tell your insurer the following information:

  • Your insurance policy number.

  • The reason behind your claim.

  • A detailed outline of what happened.

  • A crime reference number (if you are claiming because of a crime) which will be supplied by the police.

  • The value of any property which you are making house insurance claims on; this may involve showing receipts depending on the terms of your policy.

Keep in mind that an individual insurer may have different departments that deal with different kinds of home insurance claims procedure. So, for example, if you are robbed and are claiming on your contents insurance then you will deal with that department. If, however, you need to make a claim on a different element or feature of your policy (such as on your legal expenses coverage) then you may well be directed to a different department.

Be aware that most insurers will work with you to help you when making a home insurance claim. If, for example, you cannot access your policy documents when making house insurance claims because you had a fire at home and they have been destroyed, then the insurer will be able to work out those details with you on the phone.

Time scales for a home insurance claims procedure will vary according to the way that the insurance company works and the complexity of your claim. Remember that making a home insurance claim may invalidate your no claims bonus so do make sure that making house insurance claims will be worth your while. If you only need to claim a small sum then it may actually be worth paying the costs yourself and not taking the home insurance claims procedure route. This will protect your no claims bonus and make sure that you continue to get a discount on premium costs in the following year.
