Car insurance policy features
Car Insurance Policy Features
What Do You Need to Know?

Buying a car insurance policy is an essential move for any car owner, but it’s hardly an exciting purchase! Let’s face it, insurance policies as a whole can be dense and full of technical terms that we don’t understand; it’s no wonder that so many car drivers lose the will to live when it comes to reading through and understanding auto insurance policy features.

But, it’s really worth taking the time to understand car insurance policy features before you apply for coverage. This not only means that the car insurance you get will give the right levels of coverage, but also that you don’t end up paying for auto insurance policy features that you won’t use. And, you’ll also avoid being hit with hidden costs if you do need to make a claim. So, let’s take a quick look at some of the most common policy features:

  • Additional drivers:  If you want other people to be able to drive your car then you will need to arrange this with your insurer. This auto insurance policy feature insures designated drivers to use your vehicle.

  • Audio equipment:  Most car insurance policies will give you some coverage against the theft of audio equipment that you have in the car. Options vary here, so do check your policy. For example, if you put in a state of the art music system to replace the one that came with the car then you may not be able to claim all of the actual cost back.

  • Breakdown services: This auto insurane policy feature gives you access to a breakdown service if you need one. Read the policy terms to see if you need to pay for this as the costs may be higher than joining a standard breakdown service.

  • Courtesy cars:  A lot of car insurance policy features will offer a courtesy car for you to use if your car is out of action. This feature, however, may not apply with some policies if the car has been stolen or written off and may only apply while a vehicle is being repaired. It may also not come for free.

  • Driving out-of-country: Your insurance company may offer coverage if you drive outside the US.  This coverage may only be offered on a basic level and you may have to pay more for comprehensive coverage. Some policies will offer a number of days coverage free in any given year after which you may have to pay extra. Check to see whether it is a condition of the policy that you tell the insurance company that you will be driving out of country.

  • Driving another vehicle: This auto insurance policy feature allows you to drive somebody else’s car with insurance coverage from your own insurance company. If this feature is offered then check on what terms; in some cases you may only get coverage on a third party basis (i.e. it won’t cover vehicle damage—just people damage!).

  • Deductible:  The deductible is the amount of money you have to pay before the insurance company starts paying on a claim. So, if you have an accident that causes $250 worth of damage and your deductible is $50 then the insurer will only pay $200.

  • Legal coverage:  If you are involved in an accident that wasn’t your fault then you may have to pay up front costs during the course of the accident investigation such as solicitor’s fees and rental car costs. This car insurance policy feature gives you coverage for those expenses.

  • Medical coverage: Some auto insurance policy features will include medical coverage that can go towards costs if someone is injured in your car.

  • No claims bonus: Your no claims bonus is the number of years in which you haven’t made a claim on your policy. The higher the number of years, the larger a discount on coverage costs you will get!

  • Personal belongings: This auto insurance policy feature gives you coverage for any personal belongings that you have in the car that are stolen. Check the maximum claim limits and deductible charges here.

  • Personal injury coverage: Personal injury coverage gives you access to a sum of compensation if you have a serious injury in an accident in your car.

  • Windows and windscreen coverage: If your car insurance policy features include windows and windscreen coverage then you can have the insurer replace them if they are broken.

Understanding car insurance policy features can help you get the right car insurance policy and it can help keep costs low. If you take a long hard look at the auto insurance policy features you will actually use and do away with the
car insurance policy features that you don’t need, then you could see a decrease in your car insurance policy costs.  After all, there’s no point paying for auto insurance policy features that you’ll never use!
