No claims bonus
Protect Your No Claims Bonus:
Don’t Lose the Discount!

If you get through a full year of driving with an insurance policy without making a claim then you will be given a no claims bonus by your insurer. Insurance companies are obviously really pleased if you haven’t had to make a claim (it saves them money!) so they’ll reward you with a discount on your next year’s insurance costs. It’s important, therefore, to protect your no claims bonus as this discount will increase every time you add a year to your no claims bonus. The more years you have, the more you can save!

So, how can you protect your no claims bonus? Obviously, you cannot factor an accident that comes out of the blue, but you can take specific measures to protect your bonus by taking care with your driving behavior and your vehicle.

For example, you can:

  1. Drive safely.  It can be easy to make a mistake when driving that leads to an insurance claim, so take care to drive safely. If you do, then you lessen the chances of your having an accident in the first place which will lead to you losing your no claims bonus.

The biggest mistake people make is driving too fast.  This is easy to do when you get a little too confident. So, remember to drive at safe speeds. This will minimize the risks of your having an accident.

  1. Drive in a safe car.  Another way to protect your no claims bonus is to make sure that you keep your car in tip top order. Having your car serviced and checked regularly will help you avoid those kinds of vehicle problems that can cause damage, not to mention car accidents.

Make sure to check your oil, water, and tires regularly and—every now and then—take five minutes to check all the dashboard buttons and their related functions work. If you ignore even minor problems, then your car could break down or need work which will see your bonus fly out the window!

If you have built up a significant no claims bonus (i.e. with years of no claims) then you may actually want to look at taking out a car insurance policy that also helps protect your no claims bonus. Some insurance policies nowadays offer a feature that allows you to pay an additional fee on top of your standard insurance premium to get protection in this regard. This may be applied to any claim that you make in the course of an insurance year or for a set number of claims.

Whether you pay a little extra to protect your no claims bonus with your insurer or you simply make sure to drive safely in a well-maintained vehicle, remember that your no claims bonus doesn’t just tell an insurer that you are a safe driver (or a lucky one!) for avoiding accidents; it also tells the insurer that you can have a discount!
